Spring is one of the best times to plant trees in New England — the soil is workable, temperatures are mild, and rainfall helps new trees establish their root systems before the heat of summer. This year's spring planting season was one of our most productive yet.
What We Accomplished
Over the course of several weekend planting events, more than 60 volunteers came together to plant 80+ trees across three Springfield neighborhoods. Species planted included red maples, serviceberries, and tulip trees — all well-suited to Springfield's urban conditions.
Each tree was planted by a trained crew with proper technique: wide planting holes, native soil backfill, deep watering, and a ring of wood chip mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
